This practice was soon picked up by the upper classes, and from there it progressed into the middle class, with which it is still inherently associated today (Bailey 17).When calling was practiced, the female in the relationship held most of the power because men came to see house with her parents present.But when dating replaced calling, the males held most of the power, for they paid for the date, drove the automobiles, and came by the girl's house only to pick her up.Since the turn of the century, there has been a greater freedom between men and women, for example, both attend the same schools with the same classes.Both sexes become accustomed to the other at early ages which is very conducive to the practice of dating (Merrill 61).Dating essentially replaced the practice of calling which was the primary way of courtship before the mid-1920's.
